Celebrating Our Identity
The most recognizable and historic building on campus, Francis Hall was built in 1925 as a home for orphans and for young women planning to enter the religious community. This beautiful building, beloved by all, will undergo dramatic initial renovation to improve fine and performing arts facilities and house our new Center for Community Engagement and the Center for Ethics and Leadership, while meeting ADA standards and enhancing its historic character. One of several capital projects in our master plan, the first stage of the Francis Hall renovation is part of an effort to celebrate our Franciscan identity and mission by transforming not only our signature building but also our campus entranceway and adjoining property—including Angelica Park.
Alvernia’s master plan celebrates our historically strong relationship with the City of Reading. By creating a new entranceway that winds through the Sisters’ idyllic property, and by improving the fields, lighting, and open vistas of Angelica Park, we aim to provide a more gracious welcome to campus for students and guests alike, while improving a beautiful community green space.
Beyond improving the physical symbols of our Franciscan identity, we also seek funding to expand programs that deepen the faculty and staff’s understanding of our Franciscan heritage and that support students engaged in mission-related learning and/or research, including international mission and service programs.
